Punjab Launches Rs. 10,000 Monthly Support for 1.5 Million Low-Income Citizens
In a major step towards easing financial burdens, the Punjab government has approved a new relief package for the province’s labor class and low-income families. During the 25th cabinet meeting, the provincial leadership greenlit a monthly assistance of Rs. 10,000 for 1.5 million eligible citizens across Punjab.
Financial Aid for Struggling Workers
This initiative, aimed at supporting laborers and daily wage earners, is one of the most extensive welfare programs in the region’s recent history. The assistance will be delivered through newly introduced ration cards, ensuring that the benefits reach the right people without delay. The move is expected to offer much-needed relief to families struggling with rising living costs and limited job opportunities.
Support for Farmers and Wheat Sector Reforms
The cabinet didn’t stop there. Recognizing the need for agricultural stability, officials introduced the Electronic Warehouse Receipt System. This new system allows farmers to store their wheat at no cost, as the government will now cover storage charges. This change aims to prevent forced sales at low prices and improve farmer earnings.
In addition, an amendment to the Food Grains (Licensing Control) Order, 1957, was passed. Now, flour mills are required to buy at least 25% of their wheat directly from farmers. Mills that fail to meet this quota risk losing their operating licenses. To encourage market competition, the wheat sector has also been deregulated, giving growers more control over pricing and sales.
Public Transport and Healthcare Improvements
Looking at the long-term development of urban areas, the cabinet approved a new electric bus project for Rajanpur—an environmentally friendly solution for public transport. Feasibility studies have also been authorized for mass transit systems in Faisalabad, Gujranwala, and Lahore under the Yellow, Blue, and Purple line projects.
In the healthcare sector, additional funds have been released to purchase essential medical supplies, equipment, and furniture for hospitals. These upgrades aim to enhance patient care and reduce shortages in critical areas of the healthcare system.
With this multi-faceted relief and reform package, the Punjab government is stepping up efforts to support its citizens—both in rural and urban settings—by boosting welfare, agriculture, infrastructure, and healthcare.
